|Volleyball Upsets Utah State Saturday Night|
San Jose-With her fourth ace of the night, Hanah Blume sealed the upset win for the San Jose State volleyball team over conference leader Utah State, 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-21) Saturday night in a Western Athletic Conference match at Spartan Gym.
The Spartan win was a total team effort from all seven players on the court. Mary Alice O'Reilly led all hitters with 14 kills as she hit .393 for the match with two solo blocks and two block assists. Krista Miller added 11 kills, nine digs and four block assists.
"This was an awesome feeling," said Miller with a wide-grin. "We were very excited, and it showed with all the smiles on my teammates faces. We knew how well we play at home and wanted to keep it going.
"Our hard work in practice paid off on the court tonight, especially the blocking that we have worked on week. We maintained our confidence throughout the match and did let things get to us tonight."
Alex Akana hit .600 for the match with seven kills on 10 attempts and just one error and added four blocks. Outsides Samantha O'Connell and Blume each had eight kills. Michaela Leonard had 40 assists and five digs, while Kiely Pieper seemed to be in the right place every time for her 17 digs.
"We stuck to our game plan tonight, playing composed and focused on the court," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "Krista hit really well and helped us keep all three of our hitters offensively in the match. She freed up our middles and outsides to be successful.
"This showed our team that we compete against any team on the court. We believe as a team that we can be successful, and that everyone has to contribute and work hard."
