Fort Collins, Colo.-Freshman Cha Cha Willhoite finished tied for fifth in her first collegiate tournament, and the San Jose State women's golf team shot the second-lowest team score in the final round to finish fourth at the Colonel Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic. The Spartans finished the third round with a 296 and ended the tournament an 892. The team made 15 birdies on Tuesday, four each from Willhoite and Regina De Guzman, three each from Megan Osland and Rachelle Reali and one from Kathleen Rojas. Rojas also made an eagle on the par-4, 369-yard, 12th hole. The fourth-place finish at this tournament is the best for San Jose State since placing fourth at the 2008 tournament. "We started the season with a good start, especially with the competition we are facing this fall," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Patience was the biggest key to our round today. We knew that we were starting our round on some of the hardest holes on the course, and we were going to make some bogeys. We accepted that and then made birdies on the ones we could." One of those holes San Jose State took advantage of was the 18th hole. The par-4, 348-yard hole was one of the toughest of the tournament, allowing just seven birdies in the third round. However, the Spartans found a way to conquer that hole as all four counting scores birdied that hole. "I think our momentum really turned on 18," said Dormann. "We were able to keep our patience on that hole and made some good shots that helped us finish the tournament pretty well. We showed good energy and resilience today, bouncing back from our second round performance yesterday." Individually, Willhoite led the Spartans with a 71 in the third round to finish tied for fifth at 218. De Guzman shot a 74 in the final round to finish tied for 13th at 221. Osland finished tied for 16th at 224 after shooting a 73. Reali tied for 39th at 229, with a 78 in her third round, while Rojas with tied for 77th at 244, with a 78 on Tuesday. San Jose State returns to the state of Colorado in two weeks for the Golfweek Conference Challenge, Sept. 24-26, in Vail.
