Erie, Colo.-With a chance to advance to the national championships on the line, the San Jose State women's golf team made a valiant effort on Saturday but came up short at the NCAA West Regional played on the Colorado National Golf Club.  San Jose State finished the tournament at 903, good for 17th place in the team standings.

San Jose State started the day tied for 11th place, just six shots out of the eighth spot to advance to nationals.  Throughout the day, the last day was up for grabs, with the Spartans in the eighth spot after making the turn and shooting +4 over for the first nine holes.

After the turn, the Spartans shot +11 for the final holes to shoot a 303 to end the tournament.  The Spartans made just five birdies on the day, three over the final nine holes.

"We hung in there on the first nine holes of the day," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.  "We were waiting for something good to happen, and it just never did.  We didn't make enough birdies on our round, and if you don't do that, you cannot score.  We made a few mistakes over our final nine holes, and we just needed something to happen."

Jennifer Brumbaugh shot her lowest round of the tournament and led the team with a 74 to finish 45th at 225.  She had a birdie, three bogeys and 14 pars for her round.

Megan Osland, who entered the day in contention for an individual spot if the team did not advance, shot a 77 to end the tournament in 26th place at 221.  She had 14 pars on her round along with three bogeys and a double-bogey.

Senior Madeleine Ziegert ended her Spartan career by shooting a 76 and finishing 82nd at 230.  She was even through her first nine holes including a birdie on the par-3 fifth hole.  Ziegert finishes her career winning four Western Athletic Conference team championships, being named a first team All-WAC honoree three times and was the first San Jose State women's golfer to win a regional title when she was the co-medalist at the 2010 NCAA West Regional.

Kathleen Rojas also shot a 76 to end her tournament at 233 and finish 96th.  Rachelle Reali  rounded out the team's scoring with a 78 to end the tournament at 236 in 104th place.

"This tournament just confirms that we need to work hard over the summer and come back next year ready to go on day one of the season," said Dormann.
