Fort Lauderdale, Fla.----- San Jose State University football record-setting placekicker Austin Lopez was one of 30 players named to the 2012 Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-America team. The true freshman from Trinity High in Euless, Texas set a San Jose State kick scoring records for most points in a season (105), most PAT conversions in a season (54) and most field goals in a season without a miss (17-of-17). Through games played on January 6, 2013, he was one of three Football Bowl Subdivision kickers to make 100 percent of his field goal attempts in the 2012 season. Lopez tied a Spartans' single-game record with four field goals in San Jose State's 12-0 win at Navy on September 29. The 18-year-old Spartan kicker was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award during the season and a second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection at the end of the regular season. Since the FWAA began naming a Freshman All-America team in 2001, Lopez is just the second San Jose State player honored. In 2010, linebacker Keith Smith was named to the FWAA Freshman All-America team. |
