|MBB Evens Record To 3-3 With 82-74 Win Saturday|
Bozeman, Mont.-Another solid offensive game for James Kinney, a double-double for Chris Cunningham and a near double-dobule for D.J. Brown all contributed to San Jose State's 82-74 win at Montana State Saturday afternoon. The Spartans even their record at 3-3 on the season.
Kinney followed up his 30-point performance at #10 Kansas with 23 points to lead all scorers. He was 9-of-16 from the field including 3-of-8 from three-point range and added two assists and two steals. Kinney also finished second on the team in rebounding with seven.
Cunningham recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. He was 6-of-11 from the field and added a block in 34 minutes of action.
D.J Brown finished the game with 10 points, including 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He missed a double-double by one assist as Brown dished out a career-best nine in the game. Brown made key free throws down the stretch for the Spartans in the win. One of the only blemishes of the game for Brown was his first missed free throw of the year after making his first 16.
"My main goal was to get all of teammates involved in the game," said Brown. "I felt like our offense was stagnate lately, and I wanted to do my best to get everyone involved and get good shots."
The Spartans held the lead for almost 36 minutes of the game, taking the lead for good with a Kinney three-pointer at 16:20 left in the first half to make it 7-6. In the second half, San Jose State led by as many as 15 points in the second half at 48-33.
Montana State (1-5) went to a zone defense with San Jose State leading 58-44 and slowly chipped away at the Spartan lead. The Bobcats got as close as four points at 73-69 with 2:59 left I the game, but a banked three-point shot by Louis Garrett gave the Spartans breathing room at 76-69. D.J. Brown then made four consecutive free throws to help ice the game for the Spartans.
"We anticipated Montana State playing a lot of zone on us today so it wasn't a surprise when they did," said Spartan head coach George Nessman. "When they did go to zone, we got stagnate and tentative on offense because is was the first time we saw zone on us for an extended time this season. You should never turn it over against a zone, and we did and gave them fast break opportunities.
"I am really pleased with the win. This place is a tough place to play. For us to lead basically from start to finish is a pretty good, pretty solid effort overall. It was not perfect, but very few games are right now."
The Spartans made a slight change to their starting lineup on Saturday, as Garrett replaced Chris Jones. Garrett finished the game with seven points and a blocked shot in 19 minutes of action.
LaVanne Pennington came off the bench for the Spartans and added 11 points and four rebounds. Alex Brown added nine points, three rebounds and a blocked shot. He was also 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
The Spartans play their third consecutive road game at UC Davis on Wednesday, December 5, at 7 p.m.
