San Martin, Calif. -- After the first 18 holes, San Jose State men's golf is in a tie for fifth place in the Gifford Collegiate at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif.
The Spartans shot an eight-over par 363 as a team at the 7,360-yard, par 71 CordeValle Country Club. They are alongside #23-Northwestern in fifth, trailing the leader UCLA by 13 shots.
Cody Blickensderfer was San Jose State's low man in the first round firing a two-under par 69. He had five birdies on the day and is currently in a tie for fifth place on the player leader board.
Connor Covington and Landon Polterock join Blickensderfer inside the top-25. Covington shot a 71 (E) and is tied for 13th while Polterock, in his first action of the season, is tied for 23rd. Daniel Semmler shot a 75 (+4) good for 42nd, and Justin Estrada is tied for 52nd after a 76 (+5).
Taylor Bromley added a 77 (+6) for the Spartans in the play six, score five format. Thomas Masters posted a 79 (+8) as an individual.
Stanford's Cameron Wilson set the pace in round one shooting a 10-under par 61. He is seven strokes ahead of the group of three players tied in second place.
With 36 holes remaining, San Jose State sits ahead of top-25 teams Southern Methodist University (13) and Southern California (8). The 54-hole event continues on Tuesday with second-round tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. off holes one and 10.
The Spartans' final tournament of the fall series concludes Wednesday with the final 18 holes.
