Fresno, Calif. ----- Competing in only five events, San Jose State broke three pool and three meet records as the Spartans' women's swimming and diving team took second in the first day of the Early Bird Invitational held at Fresno State's Aquatic Center.

 "We are very pleased with the progress of the meet," head coach Sage Hopkins said about the three-team meet with the University of California and host Fresno State.  "We had some great races and I am pleased with how this season is turning out. We are going to have to focus on upcoming weeks and get ready for the Arena Invitational."

California, an early-season favorite to win the 2013 NCAA Championships, led the team scoring with 127.5 points. San Jose State was a solid second at 80.5 followed by Fresno State's 55 in the team scoring.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Christina Bruni, Darcie Anderson, Ashlyn Acosta, and Marisa DeWames started the Spartans' record-setting day finishing third at 1:45.61 and bettered the previous pool mark of 1:46.13 and meet record of 1:47.20. 

San Jose State concluded its meet with its 800 Freestyle Relay of team of Amy Friedhoff, Kiley Foster, Erika Harvey and DeWames, finishing fourth behind three Cal quartets at 7:32.71, nearly eight seconds faster the old meet record and the sixth fastest time in Spartan history.

In between the relay teams,  Friedhoff raced to a third-place finish in the 500 Free with a 4:58.52 pool and meet record time. 

Julia Craddock had a busy meet swimming in three races. She posted pool and meet record times of 5:02.68 in the 500 Free and a 2:07.18 in the 200 Individual Medley, and swam the opening leg of the 800 Free Relay for the Spartans' B team.

On Saturday, October 27, the Spartans travel to UC Davis for their second dual meet of the season.
