Buffalo, N.Y.-Three Spartans recorded double-double Saturday afternoon, but the San Jose State volleyball team fell to Canisius, 25-23, 25-20, 12-25, 25-22, at the UB Invitational.
Hanah Blume led all hitters with 15 kills and added a team-best 16 digs for her third consecutive double-double of the weekend. Samantha O'Connell recorded 14 kills and 10 digs, while setter Michaela Leonard recorded her second double-double of the weekend with 47 assists and 12 digs.
Mary Alice O'Reilly again led the team with five blocks, three solo and two assists, and added 11 kills and two digs. Alex Akana added six kills and four block assists. The Spartans hit just .181 for the match with 56 kills on 160 attempts and 27 hitting errors. The team did record a season-high eight aces in the match - two by Blume, Leonard and Pieper and one by O'Connell and Akana.
"We made too many attack errors today to be successful," said Spartan head coach Oscar Crespo. "Canisius played very well this match and had us well scouted. They put the ball back over the net and allowed us to make mistakes that gave them points.
"Our defense dug the ball well in the match, and we did not capitalize in transition and in setting our middles for our offense to get going. We have to learn how to make adjustments in our hitting and setting to what the defense is giving us. We have learned a lot from this weekend and can get better "
San Jose State plays next weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational. The Spartans play Northwestern State and Texas Tech on Friday, August 31, and Texas-Pan American on Saturday, September 1.
