The San Jose State men and women’s cross country program joined forces with the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital as volunteers to raise money at the second annual Packard Summer Scamper on June 23.

The Packard Summer Scamper attracted runners from around the Bay Area to lace up for a 5,000-kilometer or 10,000-kilometer race through the Sand Hill Fields near the Stanford campus.

Proceeds from more than 2,400 participants that day benefitted the children’s hospital located in Palo Alto, Calif.

“We want to make a conscious effort to get involved in our community,” said Spartan cross country coach Ron Davis.

Davis and his student-athletes were responsible for marking the course and keeping participants inside the track’s parameters during the 10K race.

“They were really happy to have us out there,” Davis said. “It was a great event to be a part of. We want our program to be involved in more events like this one.”

The collective effort during the weekend helped raise over $160,000 for the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.
