Henderson, Nev. -- The final day of the 2012 Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship belonged to San Jose State. The Spartans captured their first ever WAC team championship and senior Jay Myers made it two years in a row a San Jose State individual won medalist honors.

The Team Champions

San Jose State opened up an eight-stroke lead with nine holes remaining and kept the advantage the rest of the way. The Spartans led the tournament in level and sub-par rounds, and for the second day in a row played holes 17 and 18 under par on the 7,313-yard par 72 Rio Secco Golf Club. 

The Spartans finished with a 54-hole total of 876, six strokes ahead of defending champion New Mexico State's 882. Fresno State was third at 886.

"We had a better level of focus. We just played the golf course. We fought hard and we won," said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday.

"It took a whole team effort. This is a very tough golf course. The 11^th through 16^th holes can really come back and bite you hard," the Spartans' coach said about maintaining the lead the entire final 18 holes.

All five San Jose State players were in the top-20 in the run to the championship run.

Adding on to Myers' win, Matthew Hovan notched his sixth career top-five result shooting a four-over par 220 for a fifth-place tie and Christopher Lang had his best round of the championship in the final 18 holes with an even-par 72 for a 16th place tie with teammate Connor Covington at 225. Sophomore Justin Estrada tied for 19th with a 226.

The conference victory gives San Jose State its fourth win of the 2011-12 season making this team the first since 1982 to win four tournaments in a season. The win also gives SJSU an automatic berth into NCAA Regional Championships held May 17-19.

Myers - The Individual Champ

Jay Myers (Branham HS, San Jose) fired a 71 in the final round for his third consecutive sub-par score at the tournament. He finished with a five-under par 211 and won the individual championship with New Mexico State's Justin Shin on the first playoff hole.

"We played #1 which was 406 yards down wind. I hit my driver to the back of the green, 30 feet away from the hole. My (first) putt went 4-feet past. Then, I hit it straight up hill for a birdie," said Myers about the playoff win. Shin reached the green in two and missed a 20-foot birdie try.

For Myers, it is his second individual win of the season and second of his career.

Myers became the second consecutive Spartan to be the individual WAC champion, following Mark Hubbard's 2011 win. Myers was the only player in the 40-player field under par for each of the three rounds on the par 72, 7,313-yard Rio Secco Golf Course.

WAC Honors Spartans

San Jose State is taking home four WAC end of the year awards. Myers was named a first-team All-WAC honoree as well as the Player-of-the-Year. 

Matthew Hovan earned second-team All-WAC honors and head coach John Kennaday was named the WAC Coach of the Year.
