|Lopez, Cox Lead Offense in 10-6 Win|
Orem, Utah-Breanna Lopez hit her fifth home run of the season, and Michelle Cox was just a home run short of hitting for the cycle as the San Jose State softball team won 10-6 over Utah Valley Thursday afternoon at Wolverine Field.
Lopez was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored. She singled in the first inning to drive in one of the four Spartan runs. Lopez then hit her team-best fifth home run in the second inning to drive in three runs. With her home run, she is now fourth by herself on the San Jose State career home run list with 11.
Cox went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and a stolen base. She started her trek for the cycle with a single in the first inning, followed by a triple in the second, single in the fifth and double in the seventh. She stole her 21st base of the season in the first inning and is tied for second on the San Jose State single season list, nine away from the school record.
The Spartans scored 10 runs on 13 hits in the game, scoring four runs in the first and three in the second to take the lead for good. The team added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
Starting pitcher Jordan Sauceda faced just four batters and allowed four runs before being pulled for Allison Lang who pitched three innings and improved her record to 2-1. Jennifer Ames pitched the final four innings to pick up her first save of the season. She allowed just two hits and one unearned run. Ames now has four career saves, tying for fifth all-time at San Jose State.
"Michelle and Breanna had nice days for us today," said Spartan head coach Peter Turner. "Jen pitched more like what I expected from her this season. She didn't allow runs that we needed her to do. We need her to pitch like that down the stretch for us."
San Jose State now plays a three-game Western Athletic Conference series at Brigham Young this weekend. The teams play a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. MDT, and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m. MDT. All three games will be televised on BYUtv and on www.byutv.org
