|Valleau To Compete On Floor At National Championships|
Indianapolis, Ind.-After tying for first on the floor Saturday night, San Jose State women's gymnast Katie Valleau secured herself a spot at the 2011 National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships, April 15-17, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Valleau saved her best performance of the year for the NCAA Corvallis Regional this past Saturday night where she scored a career-best 9.900 to tie three other gymnasts for first place. With her win, she advanced to the championships to represent not only the Covallis region, San Jose State and San Diego, her hometown. Of the approximately 196 student-athletes who will be participating at the championships, Valleau is the only athlete from the San Diego area to compete.
A walk-on her freshman year, Valleau has competed on floor each of her three years at San Jose State. This season, she competed on the floor in 11 of the 12 Spartan meets, scored a 9.825 or higher in eight meets and did not score less than a 9.750 this year. Valleau is a first team All-WAC honoree on floor this season after finishing tied for second at the Western Athletic Conference championships with a 9.825.
Majoring in hospitality and event planning, Valleau is successful in the classroom as well. She is a San Jose State Scholar Athlete and an Academic All-WAC honoree.
Valleau is just the fourth Spartan in school history to compete at the National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships. Three other Spartans competed in the all-around - Dani Albright in 2001 and Veronica Porte and Thomasina Wallace in 2009. Wallace is the first alternate in the all-round this season from the Corvallis Regional.
At the NCAA Championships, Valleau will compete in the second session on Friday, April 15, at 6 p.m. EDT. She rotates with the Florida Gators that day and competes in the third rotation of the session. Valleau will practice on Thursday from 1:50-2:50 p.m. at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. All practice sessions are free and open to the public.
After Friday's sessions, the top four individuals in each event (plus ties) from the two preliminary and all-around competition sessions will compete in the individual-event competition on Sunday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
