Defensive tackle Jarron Gilbert, who set a school record for career tackles for loss, was named the 2008 San Jose State University football Most Valuable Player at the team’s annual awards banquet.
Gilbert, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound senior from Chino, Calif., led the nationally-ranked Spartan defense with 21.5 tackles for loss and 9.0 quarterback sacks. His regular-season tackles for loss total is the most by a Football Bowl Subdivision defensive tackle or nose tackle since the 2005 season. He finished the regular season with a single-season career best 51 tackles, 36 of them solo tackles, two forced fumbles and three pass break-ups. Besides being voted the team’s Most Valuable Player, he was the recipient of the team’s Bronko Nagurski Award signifying the player who made the most contributions on offense, defense and special teams. During the season, Gilbert played as a wing man on kick-scoring situations and was used as an extra tight end. Center Justin Paysinger was named Most Inspirational. Paysinger, one of 13 national finalists for the Wuerffel Trophy given to the player who best exemplifies the player who best combines community service, academics and athletic achievement, returned to action in 2008 after missing most of 2007 and all of 2008 spring practice. Linebacker Pompey Festejo was named Special Teams Player of the Year. Though he did not start a game, Festejo finished among the team’s top-10 tacklers with 49 tackles. Guard Ailao Eliapo and defensive end Carl Ihenacho received Linemen of the Year awards. Safety Tiuke Tuipulotu and running back Brandon Rutley were named Freshmen of the Year. Running back Chris Reese, a two-time Academic All-Western Athletic Conference selection, received the “Scholar-Athlete” award. Offensive lineman Norman Romero and defensive tackle Aaron Gilbert were named Scout Team Players of the Year. Jarron Gilbert, Paysinger and cornerbacks Coye Francies and Christopher Owens were recognized as team captains after a mid-season vote by their teammates. They were four of 26 players accorded Spartan Club status for the season. Players earned Spartan Club recognition for contributing winning performances in at least 70 percent of the games they played. Linebackers Braden Storaasli, Justin Cole, Travis Jones, Duke Ihenacho, and Festejo; defensive backs Peyton Thompson, Devin Newsome, Kyle Flynn and Tuipulotu; defensive linemen Jeff Schweiger, Carl Ihenacho, Mohamed Marah, and Adonis Davis; tight ends Jeff Clark and Brian Elledge; running backs Yonus Davis and Rutley; wide receivers David Richmond and Terrance Williams; and special teams players Matt Wigley, Philip Zavala and Jared Strubeck were among the Spartan Club honorees. |
