San Jose, Calif.-----Adrian Oliver scored a game-high 30
points including San Jose State's first eight in the overtime period leading
the Spartans to an 84-80 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in a non-conference
men's basketball game.
Playing
despite a sinus problem, the 6-foot-4 Oliver played 44 minutes one night after
San Jose State lost a 76-71 decision at the University of San Francisco. He
opened the extra period with a blocked shot, a free throw on a two-shot
situation, a three-point play and a pair of baskets to give the Spartans (4-4)
an 80-73 lead.
"I've
been struggling with my shot (this season). I got frustrated at times. I found
out what was wrong at today's shoot-around. It was something my Uncle Allen
(Oliver) taught me. It's a minor thing that has to do with my follow through,"
said Oliver, who was 11-of-24 from the field. He was 8-of-14 from the field
after halftime.
"Adrian
showed up for us tonight and made some big shots. He's been battling a sinus
thing. I'm proud of his effort," said San Jose State coach George Nessman about
his star guard who also pulled down 11 rebounds. "Adrian was very heady and very good at staying in the
moment."
The
Spartans also got a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with 18 points from
center Chris Oakes. Mac Peterson came off the bench and added 14 points
including San Jose State's last four points from the free throw line in the
final 33 seconds.
Cal
State Bakersfield (1-6) had four players in double figure scoring. Forward
Trent Blakely, scoreless and 0-for-10 from the field at halftime, came on to
score 21 points after intermission. Forward Donald Johnson added 20.
Throughout the night, the Spartans had to battle the Roadrunners' 2-3 zone which later turned into a 1-3-1 trap according to Nessman.
"The zone really bothered us. They were the first team to zone us for any extended period of time. It neutralized our 'bigs' (Oakes, C.J. Webster & Kyle Thomas). We haven't faced much zone. I'm pleased with the way the guys handled it," added the San Jose State coach.
Neither team led by more than nine points when the Spartans were ahead 69-60 with 4:10 remaining in regulation. A pair of Blakely three-point baskets put Cal State Bakersfield back in the game. The Roadrunners took a 70-69 lead with a Johnson basket at 1:17. Oliver answered with a 3-point basket at 0:55 to go. A Johnson lay-up at 0:33 were the final points in regulation time.
San
Jose State returns to action after final exams when the team travels to UC
Irvine for a December 18 contest.
