San Francisco, Calif.-----Despite its poorest shooting night of the season, San Jose State head coach George Nessman felt the Spartans scored enough points to win a game on the road.
Guard Adrian Oliver led the Spartans with 17 and Justin Graham scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half. The San Jose State backcourt tandem could not compensate for USF forward Dior Lowhorn coming off the bench and matching his season scoring high of 26 as the University of San Francisco posted a 76-71 comeback win over the Spartans in a non-conference men's basketball game.
Lowhorn, who did not start due a lingering illness, scored 10 consecutive points for the Dons (3-6) over a 2:46 span to wipe out a San Jose State 34-23 halftime lead that reached as many as 13 points early in the second half. His three-point play with 10:52 remaining in the game gave USF a 50-43 lead and was part of a 20-point second-half scoring outburst.
"We didn't do a good job defending him (Lowhorn). He's a great player. He had a big second half. He went to work on us and he was creating offense for his teammates," said San Jose State coach George Nessman, whose team shot 38.5 percent from the field.
The Dons extended their lead to as many as 11 points, 64-53 with 3:29 remaining, on a Lowhorn basket, USF's last of the game, and stayed ahead for good from the free throw line. USF made 27 of 41 free throws ending a six-game losing streak.
"In the first half, we came out strong. In the second half, we need to take it up a notch higher, but we didn't do it and that's dangerous," said center Chris Oakes, who scored all six of his points in the first half. Oakes led all players with nine rebounds.
The Spartans seemed to have control at both ends of the floor in the first 20 minutes. USF made just 30.8 percent of their field goal tries in the first half. Reserve guard Robert Owens keyed San Jose State's first-half attack with his three three-point baskets with Oliver, who nailed his last three field goal tries including a three-pointer, after making just one of his first seven shots.
"We can't dwell on it (tonight). We have to get ready, regroup, and pick it up. They looked for Lowhorn (in the second half), got a lot of loose balls and rebounds that really hurt us."
"We're not playing with the level of confidence we need. Maybe, some of that is related to the score; maybe some of that is related to other things. We'll keep working on that. You've got to play for 40 minutes," added Nessman.
"We wanted to make Oliver work for his points. They've got Owens and Graham and guys inside who can score. We wanted to limit them to one shot," said USF coach Rex Walters. With the Dons finding Lowhorn inside, USF shot 66.7 percent after halftime to finish with a 48.0 percent field goal figure.
San Jose State returns to action, Wednesday, December 9, hosting Cal State Bakersfield at The Event Center. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
